About Reef Bay Trail

The Reef Bay Trail is one of the most popular and scenic hikes in Virgin Islands National Park, located on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Spanning approximately 2.5 miles one-way, the trail offers a moderate to challenging descent through lush tropical forests, leading hikers to the stunning Reef Bay and its historical and natural wonders. Along the way, hikers are treated to a variety of landscapes, including dense rainforest, cactus-dotted slopes, and views of the coastline. One of the trail's highlights is the opportunity to view ancient petroglyphs carved by the island's early Taino inhabitants, as well as the remnants of a sugar plantation, offering a glimpse into the island's colonial past. The trail ends at the beautiful Reef Bay, where hikers can enjoy the peaceful surroundings and view the bay's crystal-clear waters. Though the hike is primarily downhill, the return trip requires a bit more effort due to the steep ascent. The Reef Bay Trail is an enriching adventure for those interested in nature, history, and breathtaking scenery, making it one of St. John’s must-do trails.
